Completed in 2024, the Kalasatama–Pasila alliance rail project addressed the issue of natural resource consumption and emissions in several ways. Almost 70% of the soil masses and other recyclable structures identified were reused. The machinery and vehicles were powered by renewable HVO diesel, reducing CO2 emissions on site by 90%. The project used low-emission concrete for certain structures, which reduced CO2 emissions by 40% compared to conventional concrete. The sustainability themes of the project were based on the BREEAM Infrastructure certification. This allowed the project to receive the full amount of green funding granted for high-quality sustainability work, the first project in Finland to achieve this.
